ED 663   Cognitive Disabilities

Course Description: 

         To facilitate the understanding of the field of cognitive disabilities   with children, youth, and young adults.  Topics include the nature of early development, influences, and causation with an emphasis on multicultural issues and perspectives.  This will be a lifespan approach with social and ethical issues discussed within the context of infancy, childhood, elementary school-age, adolescence and adult years.  A multidisciplinary approach with a focus on community resources will be used.  To provide students with the opportunity to work with individuals with cognitive disabilities in a practicum setting and to become aware of a variety of community resources.

 Objectives:

1.      To identify major milestones in the history of providing services for

individuals with cognitive disabilities.  (CEC 3.1) (PI 4.62.2)

2.      To be able to define the Wisconsin legal definition of cognitive disabilities

as well as the federal definition.  (PI 4.62.4)

3.      To summarize the programs available for children and youth with cognitive

disabilities and the advantages and disadvantages of each.  (CEC 2.9)

4.      To analyze the legal issues involved in the identification, education,

intervention and service provision with individuals with cognitive

disabilities.   (CEC 2.9) (PI 4.62.2)

5.      To compare and contrast the major theoretical perspectives regarding children

with cognitive disabilities.   (CEC 2.2) (PI 4.62.1)

6.      To identify the contribution of family, biological, and environmental factors

in the origins of cognitive disabilities.  

7.      To distinguish characteristics of various types of cognitive disabilities and to

identify possible interventions and services.   (PI 4.62.12)

8.      To contrast screening, assessment, and diagnosis of cognitive disabilities with

a focus on functional, naturalistic, positive assessment.  To note socioeconomic and cultural factors that may influence assessment and to study

the research in this area. 

9.      To present various behavioral strategies (CEC 2.4, 2.6, 2.8) (PI 4.62.1)

10.  To present psycho educational and current instructional strategies.

11.  To focus on ecological and functional programming and self-determination.

12.  To discuss child, family, and teacher advocacy and multidisciplinary roles.

13.  To identify multicultural and socioeconomic factors related to service

delivery and issues related to community employment and living.

14.  To relate to families priorities and needs for their children and

the educational systems role as well as transition planning and community services with lifetime adaptations.

15    To provide information on medical and technological advances that enhance

the lives and learning of individuals with cognitive disabilities.
